Early Summer in My Backyard

Just in case you wanted to see what a Garter Snake's tongue looks like.

Sometimes a simple act like quietly stepping into one's own garden can yield magic.

A Gray Catbird showing off its rust colored butt feathers

A male Downy Woodpecker feeding his daughter. Amazingly, you can see her tongue too!

An American Lady butterfly

A duskywing, though can't figure out which kind

Lancet Clubtail (female)

It is the time for fledging for all my backyard birds. The downy woodpeckers, the various pairs inhabiting the nearby woods, have produced at least two boys and two girls. The are several Hairy woodpecker pairs as well. There are at least three daughters, one being raised by a singe dad, whose mate I found dead, unfortunately. He was the skinniest, most bedraggled Hairy Woodpecker you have ever seen. The red-bellied woodpeckers have a daughter I believe though her adult head coloring has yet to emerge so its a bit hard to tell. The sparrows multiplied and at least one industrious couple used my attic to do it. What a mess they created! I am not sure of how many juvenile Grackles have been hatched but I know I had only two starling families this year: one with three young and another with two. The Cardinals also had a child, though I'm not sure if its a boy or girl yet. Oddly, I have yet to see one Cowbird this year....
