June: Daniel Webster Sanctuary

Snapping turtle

This day I wandered Mass Audubon's Daniel Webster Sanctuary. This place never disappoints. I love watching the swallows and the purple martins. The swallows were busy mating on various posts and benches. It's quite an act of aerial mastery on the male's part, I have to say. But the highlight of my wandering was the lovely and horrible female snapping turtle emerging over the crest of the small hills surrounding the pond on her way to lay eggs.
