Smaller Birds in Winter and the Cooper's Hawk Stalking Them

Young Cooper's Hawk looking for a meal

We have had significant and long lasting snow cover this year. One serendipitous consequence of this was that birds were more visible around feeders and backyards. Song birds have been visiting my backyard feeders in numbers I've not seen before. And this has not gone unnoticed by the hawks in the area. I have a Cooper's Hawk regularly stalking the branches of the trees in the backyard in hopes of obtaining a song bird blue plate special.
